The Vitalitree Specturum
So you’re looking to buy a Vitalitree, amazing! But which one should you choose?
We currently have 3 sizes available:
VT-800 (800mm in diameter) - available in open/closed top
VT-1000 (1000mm in diameter) - available in open/closed top. Closed top VT-1000s can have 3-rings or 4-rings.
VT-1200 (1200mm in diameter) - available in open/closed top
When choosing between sizes/types there are a few important things to consider:
What is the key need for protection?
If frost is your top concern, our closed top range is the best choice for you. This provides added protection from the elements! However is wind is your main concern, go for the open top variety.
Vitalitree Closed Top: Protection with a hood that can be pulled up and hitched to a centre stake to have complete cover specifically designed for both frost and wind protection. When the frost has gone the hood can be tucked neatly inside the sleeve.
Vitalitree Open Top: Protection that is specifically designed for areas that suffer wind damage and are not so concerned with the need for frost protection. The open top is a tall tree protector and all sizes stand 1.8 metres high, it’s available in 3 different diameters.
What type of tree are you planting?
Use the spectrum image above to see some of the more common tree types our products have been used on. What’s important to consider here is size and variety.
If a tree loses its leaves in winter (deciduous) then it’s less likely to suffer from frost. Therefore choose an open top as wind protection is crucial. If a tree is leafy and frost prone a closed top will cover the complete tree.
For slower growing trees or dwarf varieties install protection with an 800mm - 1000mm diameter eg. our VT-800 or VT-1000.
For trees that are likely to branch out wider than 1 metre in diameter within 2 years install protection of 1200mm diameter to give you the most room to grow.
3-rings vs. 4-rings (VT-1000 only)
You’ll see that for our VT-1000 range we have a 3 or 4-ring option for our closed top versions. So what’s the difference? The VT-1000 3-ring version stands at 1.2 metres high and uses 1.8 metre Y-posts. Therefore this makes it shorter and easier to hitch the hood without the need for a ladder. This version is more ideal for lower growing citrus and guava trees.
In comparison, the VT-1000 4-ring version stands at 1.6 metres high and uses 2.4 metre Y-posts. Therefore this makes it taller and more suitable for established or more upright growing trees.
Simply put, we think of these as like short vs. tall options (both the tree and the hitcher!) so pick which is more suitable for your height and tree type.
